BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME!
I’m sorry to tell you that’s not guaranteed. I come across great business ideas on a regular basis but most start-ups totally over estimate their sales. In the consumer society we live in, most people have everything they need. They may want things but they probably don’t need anything (as their basic needs have long been met).
So how do you make your product/service be wanted?
– Remember not everyone will want it so choose your target market.
– Identify what that target market wants (it is either a solution to a problem they have or a feeling they want {or ideally both}).
– Talk to that target market in a manner that they can respond to. If you don’t know how, simply ask them.
– Talk consistently (and act consistently) and on a regular basis.
It is really that simple. But the difficulty lies in its simplicity. Most business start ups are racing off creating logos, website, business material, social media pages and missing getting this piece right. It is really worth your time concentrating on your target market and identifying what your product or service does for them. For example if you sell clothing in a small rural town, you could focus on clothing for a set size and age (e.g. women in their fifties who are a larger size but want to look stylish everyday) and market your business to appeal to this group. Over time your message will spread and spread to your target audience in a larger regional area than you would ever achieve by selling a general range of female clothing.
Hope that helps. If you have any specific questions on your product/service, I’d love to hear from you via unaryan@marketingeye.ie
