Social Media isn’t everything

A lot of businesses approach social media like it’s a magic wand that’s going to be the answer to all of their business problems. They contact us and want a Facebook page and Twitter account and to build up their numbers. By doing this, they believe their sales will start to grow.

Social media can and does help sales but there are lots of myths around social media. Here are my thoughts – I’d love to hear yours.

It’s not a short term fix. To really benefit from social media, you need to look at it as a long term commitment. Remember you are trying to build trust which takes time – you need to show you are willing to listen (to both positive and negative feedback) and to respond.

It’s meant to be a telephone, not a megaphone. It’s not about shouting about your latest product or service or sale. It’s trying to get people to engage with you. Are your updates engaging or of value to people?

It won’t fix a poor business plan. Business basics are still business basics. If you don’t have a strong business plan or a great product, social media isn’t going to solve these issues.

Numbers aren’t everything. Don’t focus on getting lots of likes and followers. Focus on the people who truly engage with your business and try to get them to be better advocates for you.

Remember think about what you want out of your activity in the social space rather than just doing it because it’s what everyone is doing.
