There are very few industries or markets where there isn’t lots of competition. And online is creating more and more competitors. In order to sell more and create loyal customers, you need to stand out from your competitors. So how do you make yourself stand out?


There’s lots of ways to stand out – some good, some bad.  Let’s concentrate on the good. A great book to read on the topic is Seth Godin’s “The Purple Cow” – well worth a read and is very thought provoking.


Remember the key thing is: you need to stand out in a way that resonates with your target audience. The first thing you need to do is to define your target market more precisely. It’s a common mistake to think that the more types of people you appeal to, the better. But’s that’s not true. Be precise on who your target market is (but make sure they are large enough for you to make money from).


Now try to answer why they would buy from you and not your competitors?

Get specific – good service is not strong enough, neither is quality. Nearly all business owners will say they have the best service and/or the best quality available. If you’re a coffee shop and your target market is parents in shopping during the week, what do they want and value? Are you the best place for miles around for parents to go with children, a great nappy changing area that parents rave about?, do you offer free cups of water for kids, is there an amazing play area for them? Is there a place for buggies that’s remarkable? Keep asking yourself why would your target audience buy from you and not your competitors. Describe a way to make your service or product that overwhelms the target audience with how remarkable it is.


Once you get that answer, that should become your marketing message and what your product or service should focus on.
