Top 5 website tips for small businesses

You know you need a great website (and it is possible even on a modest budget) and be on Page 1 of Google so that people can find you. Here are my top 5 website tips to help you get there:

  • Make sure your site is responsive

This just means that the site automatically re-sizes the content depending on the size of the screen it’s being viewed upon. Google punishes websites that aren’t responsive with poorer rankings as more and more people are using different devices to access websites.

  • Have multi-media on your site

Some people like to read, others like to listen and some like to watch. Some like to do all three! So think about presenting information on your website with videos, podcasts, infographics, charts, and text.

  • Be contactable

If you want people to contact you, then place your contact details clearly on every page. A good spot is in the header that runs across every page of your website. If you do that, no matter what page someone is on, they can easily find your details and contact you.

  • Metadata

Search engines like Google doesn’t see your website, they see and try to index each and every page of your website. So, in order for them to know what each page is about you need to provide some simple information in the form of a Title Tags, Descriptive Tags and Meta Description (in your content management system or talk to your web developer about it). Use keywords that describe the information on each page so you can improve your chances of ranking on Page 1 when people search for those keywords.

  • Have a blog

Your blog fuels SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Search engines love valuable content and will reward you for it. By adding a new blog once or more a month (I know I don’t do it every month!), you are also updating your website and search engines love new content. Remember your blog can also be the heart of all of your content marketing efforts – it can feed into Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, email newsletters etc.
