Why Your Business Doesn’t Show Up in AI Search (And What To Do About It)

Ask ChatGPT where to find a good physio in Kilkenny, or a joiner in Roscommon. There’s a decent chance your business won’t get a mention. Even if you’ve spent years clawing your way to page one of Google.

That’s not because you’re bad at what you do. It’s because nobody told you the rules changed.

This is the new reality of AI search for small business owners in Ireland. People are asking ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, and Perplexity a question and getting an answer on the spot. No list of ten blue links. No scrolling. Often, no click at all. It’s called zero-click search, and it’s growing fast.

Your Google ranking still matters. But it’s no longer the whole game. There’s a new layer on top now, and it decides who gets mentioned and who gets skipped entirely.

AI search for small business: how it actually works

There’s a term for this, if you want it: generative engine optimisation, or GEO. Here’s what it means.

AI tools don’t reward clever copy or backlinks the way Google used to. They reward clarity. They need to understand, instantly, what your business does and who it’s for. If that’s buried in a paragraph on your “About” page, the AI skips you and mentions someone clearer instead.

I worked with a furniture maker in Clare. Beautiful website. Gorgeous photos. But nowhere on the homepage did it say, in plain words, “bespoke furniture maker in County Clare.” The AI tools had no way of knowing what he did, never mind recommending him.

Your Google Business Profile matters more than ever here too — it’s one of the clearest, most trusted signals AI tools pull from. If yours is half-filled-in, that’s costing you.

Being mentioned on other real websites helps as well. Local press, directories, other people’s blogs. AI tools are checking whether other sources back up what your own website says about you.

None of this means starting from scratch. It means making what you already do impossible to misread.

You don’t need to understand how AI works. You need your business to be impossible to misunderstand.
